Criminal defense associate attorney job in Cleveland, Ohio

Role description

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Cleveland, OH, for an Associate Attorney / Assistant Trial Counsel. The Associate Attorney will handle cases alongside lead counsel across the firm’s practice areas, including criminal defense and domestic relations, provide sound legal advice, conduct thorough research, draft pleadings, assist in trial exhibit preparation, and represent clients in negotiations, hearings and trials. The role includes pleading practice, witness preparation, and witness examination at hearings and at trial, assisting lead counsel in trial preparation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, and trial documents
• Assemble and maintain case files, exhibits and trial binders
• Assist in preparing witnesses for direct and cross examination, including preparing clients to testify
• Conduct direct and cross examination at hearings as assistant trial counsel
• Research evidentiary, constitutional and procedural issues as they arise
• Appear at arraignments, pretrials, hearings, sentencings and trials
• Negotiate with prosecutors and opposing counsel
• Meet with clients and keep them current on the status of their case

Qualifications

• Ability to provide expert legal advice and conduct extensive research
• Strong writing skills
• Strong negotiation skills and interpersonal communication abilities
• Experience with document preparation, witness preparation and witness examination
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active state bar membership
• Experience in criminal defense and case preparation preferred
• Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously with strong attention to detail
• Commitment to client advocacy and ethical legal practices
