The Cleveland Jewish News profiled Larry Zukerman of Zukerman Daiker & Lear in Cleveland as part of the Local Lawyers / Super Attorneys 2018 feature. The article, written by staff reporter Ed Carroll, focuses on Zukerman’s philosophy of criminal defense and the personal costs his work has at times demanded.
Zukerman describes his practice as “handling people in crisis,” encompassing both criminal defense and professional license defense. He explains that his best victories are often cases where no charges were ever brought, because those cannot be discussed publicly.
Most notably, Zukerman recounts representing an imam charged with making false statements approximately 14 years prior. The case triggered backlash in the Jewish community: he was removed from Jewish community boards, and people sought to have his children expelled from Solomon Schechter Day School. His family received death threats, requiring security at his home and his son’s bar mitzvah. Rabbi Jim Rogozen ultimately defended him, citing Torah as the basis for robust defense of the accused.
Zukerman traces his commitment to his immigrant grandparents from Poland: “(They) instilled in me a desire to help other people not be persecuted similarly as we were over in Europe. That instilled in me a desire to fight hard for people because nobody fought for us.”
