The Cleveland Jewish News quoted Larry Zukerman, managing partner at Zukerman, Daiker & Lear Co. in Cleveland, alongside Stuart Garson of Garson & Johnson, on how the rise of the internet has made protecting personal information both more important and more difficult.
Zukerman explained how scammers exploit digital access: “A lot of people have much more access to a lot of our information and have the skills to hack into what we thought were secure accounts.” He described a common tax refund scam in which fraudsters use stolen Social Security numbers and dates of birth to file false returns and redirect refunds. “It’s millions of dollars a year stolen by people who illegally take our information.”
His advice: avoid inputting sensitive information — SSN, date of birth, credit card numbers — directly onto the internet where possible, and understand that even seemingly secure databases can be breached. He acknowledged the difficulty of pursuing perpetrators: “Catching these people is like getting blood from a stone.”
